The Czech Republic is located in Central Europe, in the mild climate zone, and has an area of 78,864 km2. As an independent country, the Czech Republic appeared on European maps after Treaty of Versailles in 1918 as a part of former Czechoslovakia. Until then the Czech lands of Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia had been under Austrian rule. Population of the Czech Republic is about 10,3 million. The capital is the ”golden city” of Prague. Official language is Czech. Natural border of the Czech Republic is formed by mountain ranges. The Czech Republic is rich in rivers, pounds, lakes and dams. With its historical monuments and remarkable places of countless natural beauty the Czech Republic is a real paradise for tourists. The countryside of the Czech Republic is varied, you can find something special in every part. Bohemia, one part of the republic, is flanked by a ring of mountains – The Sumava Range, a magnet for all nature lovers, The Czech Forest, with its pleasurable ridge-top walks, The Krusne Mountains, with wonderful forests, fascinating mountain peaks, The Jizerske Mountains, which are actually a continuation of the highest mountain range in the Czech Republic Krkonose, known also as the Giant Mountains. Here city dwellers can escape from the city hustle to peaceful mountain scenery. Krkonose and The Orlicke Mountain are an ideal place for walking and skiing. But Bohemia is not only mountains. There are also prolific lowlands, which you can find in the valleys of big rivers such as the Vltava, Labe etc. Cascades of Dams on the Vltava river are very attractive for tourists. The most popular are Lipno, which is also the largest one (4870 ha), Orlik and Slapy. South Bohemia together with South Moravia is primarily rich in ponds. There are 5000 ponds in South Bohemia – a real fishermen’s paradise. The largest pond in this region is Rozumberk. Beautiful medieval castles such as Cesky Krumlov, Rozmberk, Trebon and others draw attention of visitors to this region. North and East Bohemia introduce themselves through enchanting names as Bohemian Paradise and Giant Mountains, which is worth including into your itinerary. Other beautiful natural places in this region are also: “rock town” in Prachov Rocks, The Decin Walls and The Czech Switzerland. Another part of the Czech Republic is Moravia. The Bohemia-Moravian highlands form the natural border between Bohemia and Moravia. The South of Moravia has flourishing agriculture and striking valleys, which are peppered with castles and citadels, inherited from the days of the Great Moravian Empire. The region along the Dyje River makes the bounds with Austria and is ideal for walking trips. Under the ground the Moravian Karst has plenty of marvellous caves for all visitors. You can even take a boat ride along the underground river Punkva. North Moravia is a region full of contrasts. Here you can find wild lowlands and wonderful rising mountain ranges of Beskydy and Jeseniky. This region has rich culture traditions. Many of the great composers like Beethoven, Janacek, Dvorak, Mahler lived in or visited North Moravia. If you want to discover how life used to be in the past, do not forget to visit magnificent open-air museum at Roznov pod Radhostem. The Jeseniky mountains with artificial lakes allow for plenty of outdoor activity. The castles and other sights are interesting not only for history lovers and scientists.
